Grape Crush 2015

September 20, 2015 By Greg

grape-crush-2015-2

FRIDAY ~ 5:00 pm
Saturday ~ 3:00 pm

We can’t tell you how absolutely excited – and nervous – we are to be getting our hands on locally grown grapes for the first time. Twelve thousand pounds of carefully nurtured and lovingly tended grapes are being picked at their peak of ripeness in Erskine, Minnesota and delivered to 4e Winery in two loads on October 2 and 3. These will be crushed, pressed and fermented to make next year’s wines.

We could use some help. The red wine grapes need to be crushed and put into fermenters. The white and rose wines need to be pressed and their juice put into tanks for fermentation. This is all done by hand one bucket at a time, one press at a time. No, we won’t be stomping grapes in a tub, but we will need help moving grapes and juice. So if you can pick up and carry somewhat heavy buckets of grapes and juice, we would welcome your assistance.

We are going to make a working party out of it. We anticipate the grapes arriving Friday between 5-6 and Saturday in mid afternoon.. We plan to work until the job is done. But we will break for dinner. We’ll feed you and of course there will be plenty of drinks and fun.

Dress for work – you will want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting stained with grape juice.

PLEASE RSVP so we can plan for food and drink.

Thank you – see you at Grape Crush 2015!

Our winery is located just SE of the I-94 Casselton exit. It is the first farmstead that you see from the road. Turn east on the frontage road and take the first right. You can’t miss it. We will be planting 80 Frontenac vines and may need some help installing trellises. We appreciate all the help we can get. We will gather at 10:00 am to start the day. Lunch and of course wine will be provided.

When:  Saturday, May 24 starting at 10:00 am

Where:  4e Winery, 3766 156th Ave SE, Durbin, ND (Mapleton on some GPS)

RSVP:  gregcook@me.com or 701.936.9692

Rain or shine, the grapes need to go in. If the weather is too severe, we will plant on Sunday, May 25. The vineyard may be muddy, so please wear appropriate footwear and clothes.

We now have a Vineyard!

May 27, 2013 By Greg

Saturday, May 25, 2013 marks a milestone in the history of 4e Winery. Twenty five friends arrived at 9:00 am to plant our first 325 vines and establish our eastern vineyard. Despite a bit of wind it was a perfect day for planting and the vines went in quickly. In all we planted 100 vines of Petite Pearl and 75 vines each of Marquette, Frontenac Blanc and Brianna.

It was a long time planning for our planting day and vines had to be sourced and ordered last December. We purchased bare root vines from Bevens Creek Vineyards in Minnesota and Northeastern Vine Supply in Vermont. As you can see below, the vines were healthy with a fantastic root system to get them going.

A day before planting we had to map out the vineyard and place a flag at every spot a new vine would be planted.

We had markers for volunteers to name a vine for the future. Enjoy these photos from our planting day and party.
